  A Tiny MySQL++ Tutorial; C++ and MySQL; MySQL++ Example

I wrote a post about how to install MySQL++ and I thought I will write a quick tutorial on how to use it too. This is a very basic MySQL++ program and it’s very self explanatory: #include <mysql++.h> #include <stdlib.h>   using namespace std; using namespace mysqlpp;   int main() { try { Connection conn(false); conn.connect("DB NAME", "DB HOST probably localhost", "DB USER", "DB PASS"); Query query = conn.query(); } catch (BadQuery er...

  Leaving comments in real life

As a programmer I like to write comments because I know that some future person (often me) is going to need to know something about my code that won't be immediately obvious from reading it. Here's a recent example from my homebrew display's code:// protocol_init: Set up a newly powered-on string of lights.  The lights are arranged// in an array wired diagonally starting from the bottom left.  For ease of programming// it's better if they are given numbers which correspond to coor...

  new expression vs operator new in C++

In C++, there is a new mechanism for memory allocation and management. When we want to initialize an object, we can use new expression to get enough memory for storing an object and also initialize the object. When we want to create a new object, we can use new expression, for example: Obj *obj=new Obj; Basically, what the new expression does is to allocate enough memory for storing the obj object, in addition, it will initialize the object with some intial values. Also, there is an operator new...

  PHP advisory file lock : flock

When we process a file in PHP, we may often need to acquire a lock so that other scripts cannot edit the same file at the same time. There is a flock() function in PHP which can help us lock the file we want to process. But there is one issue we should take care. Recently, ffb encountered one issue while he was trying to lock a file handle. The codes are below: $filename = "/tmp/lock.txt";      $fp = fopen($filename, "r+");   if (!$fp...

  Solution to IE setAttribute style problem

In IE7, the JavaScript setAttribute("style","attributes") doesn't work, but it works in IE 8 and other web  browsers. To solve the STYLE problem in IE 7 we can use a workaround method.we can use element.style.cssText = 'color:#FF0000;';in IE 7 instead ofelement.setAttribute('style','color:#FF0000;'); ...

  Motorola : A Google company

According to Sina Tech, Motorola Mobility has changed its company logo this week. The new logo comes with new graphic design and new font design. The new logo still has the 'M' badge and "MOTOROLA". However, the color of the 'M' badge changes from the old white to the new gray and the outer ring color also changes from red to multi-color. It is more like the Google logo's color scheme. At the same time, the "MOTOROLA" string on the logo also changes from upper case letters to lower case letters...

  Rails and Web Development - Take the First Step

Getting started with web development isn’t easy. Looking back to when I started, the first few weeks were the toughest to stick with it. For someone who is new to text editors and the terminal – the installation process can be really overwhelming. I recently went through the process of helping some of my friends get set up with Ruby on Rails and after doing it a few times, I realized it would be helpful to write a post that others looking to get started could refer to.The following...

  PHP's Output Buffering

While profiling our application I came across a a rather strange memory usage by the ob_start() function. We do use ob_start() quite a bit to defer output of data, which is a common thing in many applications. What was unusual is that 16 calls to ob_start() up chewing through almost 700kb of memory, given that the data being buffered rarely exceeds 1-2kb, this was quite unusual. I started looking at the C code of the ob_start() function and found this interesting bit of code inside php_sta...

  Save QWidget as image

Qt library is an excellent GUI library for C++ programmers developed by Nokia and now is an open source project. Often, we may use QPainter to draw strings, lines or images on a QWidget. We can override the QWidget's paintEvent() method when we want to use QPianter object to draw something on a QWidget. If we want to save the items drawn on QWidget as image for later reference, what can we do? We can save a QWidget as an image. Here is the code for achieving this: QPixmap pixmap(this->size())...

  Solving easy problems the hard way

There’s a charming little brain teaser that’s going around the Interwebs. It’s got various forms, but they all look something like this: This problem can be solved by pre-school children in 5-10 minutes, by programer – in 1 hour, by people with higher education … well, check it yourself!  8809=6 7111=0 2172=0 6666=4 1111=0 3213=0 7662=2 9313=1 0000=4 2222=0 3333=0 5555=0 8193=3 8096=5 7777=0 9999=4 7756=1 6855=3 9881=5 5531=0 2581=?
